Over the past two years, The Barbados Light & Power Co. Ltd. has been assisting the Tri-Stars Academy with its efforts to develop local basketball and to meet its mandate of providing opportunities for talented young Barbadian players to gain valuable experience in the sport outside the region, while at the same time enhancing their academic qualifications. Founder and Team Leader of Tri Stars Academy, Terry Inniss, of the Information Systems Department, has commended the Company for its support of the development of the youth in the area of basketball.  Terry notes that it is largely through this kind of assistance by corporate Barbados that Barbadian youth can truly excel and bring honour to themselves and to our country as a whole.  Terry, who stands by the Academy’s motto: “Achieving Through Youth,” has high praise for Light & Power, which has once again demonstrated its commitment to the development of our young people and which is willing to support their journey towards excellence.

Richelle Farley and Nadia-Rose Hinds are two of the Academy’s latest triumphs and recipients of basketball scholarships to United States Midwestern colleges.

Referencing their potential, Terry revealed that the girls should do well, given their talent, drive and determination – characteristics which were also recognised by Oklahoma-based coach Rolando De La Berrera, who saw them perform during the Academy’s camp in July and who was eager to assist in their development. Scholarships were subsequently arranged, with Richelle gaining acceptance to Cowley College, Arkansas, where she will pursue studies in Business Administration. Nadia-Rose will be attending Western Oklahoma College, Oklahoma to study Architectural Drawing and Technology.

Accompanied by their fathers, Matthew Farley and Richard Hinds, Richelle and Nadia-Rose recently visited the Company to thank us for our assistance.  They revealed that they were proud to have been rewarded for their determination and hard work on the basketball courts and excited to be pursuing their dreams. Both girls listened intently to the advice of Managing Director, Peter Williams and Chief Marketing Officer, Stephen Worme, who applauded their success, and encouraged them to give of their best and to make the most of their respective opportunities.

Mr. Williams said that he was pleased that Light & Power was able to play a part in the development of the players and looked forward to hearing positive things about them as their lives and careers continue to unfold.
