On Saturday, January 10, 2009, at around 8:10 a.m., a problem was experienced at our Spring Garden Generating station when two of our main steam turbine generators tripped offline triggering an island wide outage.

After carrying out the required checks, the restoration process was started and supply to the first set of customers was restored by around 9:00 a.m.

Supply to the remaining customers was progressively restored and by 11:20 a.m. all customers were back in service.

When generators trip offline, protective under-frequency devices automatically shed load to stabilise the system and equalise the load on the system with the remaining generating capacity online. However, despite the under frequency devices operating, the systems did not stabilise and other generators tripped offline, resulting in the island wide outage.

A team, led by Chief Operating Officer, Mr Mark King, has been established to investigate the cause of this outage and to take whatever corrective action is required.

We have issued an apology to all customers who may have been inconvenienced by this outage.
