|For the past two decades, The Barbados Light & Power Company has recognised the outstanding work of its employees in a way which showcases the cream of the Kilowatt crop. |
In the Keynote Address, delivered at the 20th Annual Awards Ceremony on January 22, 2005 at the Frank Collymore Hall, Mr. Andrew Gittens, Managing Director, spoke of the immeasurable value of the employees the Company's most precious asset. Mr. Gittens spoke of "making a difference" and the capacity within everyone, regardless of his/her position to make a special and unique contribution.
It is these "contributions" made in 2004 in the areas of Long Service, Safety, Total Quality, Customer Service and Attendance for which employees where lauded. By the end of the evening, Miss Sandra Franklyn and Mr. Peter Taitt emerged as the big winners, nabbing the titles of Supervisor and Employee of the Year respectively.
The winners of these titles are the ones who have accumulated the most points in the combined areas of assessment by their supervisors against agreed criteria and have undergone an interview before a panel.
Sandra, a Senior Systems Analyst in the Information Systems Department, joined the Light & Power team in 1992 and has earned recognition as a finalist for the Employee Of The Year Award in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2003, and a nomination for the Volunteer Award in 1999. Known for her strong work ethic and her ability to take the initiative in challenging situations, Sandra earned a Perfect Attendance Award for the 2001-2002 period.
Sandra is responsible for managing the implementation, maintenance and integration of IT systems and ongoing daily supervision of a team of Analysts/Programmers. She directs and co-ordinates activities of project teams, prepares project management reports and confers with project staff to provide technical advice.
Employee of The Year, Peter Taitt, a SCADA Dispatcher in the Distribution Department, has been employed by the Company since 1983 and has also built a reputation for taking the initiative and "showing courage under pressure." A strong team player and a dependable, knowledgeable employee, Peter won the Safety Award - Work Habits and was adjudged the Most Outstanding Employee in the Distribution Department in 2003.
