Light & Power Donates to the Barbados Down Syndrome Association
The Barbados Light & Power Company Limited (Light & Power) is committed to supporting charities making an invaluable impact in Barbadian communities. The Barbados Down Syndrome Association is one such organization making a meaningful difference for the last 12 years, for families with children and adults living with down Syndrome.
In the week leading up to World Down Syndrome Day, which is observed annually on March 21st, Light & Power invited the Founder and President of the Barbados Down Syndrome Association Asha Alleyne-Renwick to receive a donation in support of the ongoing programmes that assist families in various ways, including information and recreational support.
The major annual fundraiser which fuels most of the activities, is the Rock Your Socks campaign, which encourages individuals to purchase brightly coloured socks from the organization during its pop-up shops or through the Barbados Association of the disabled.
President of the Association explained, “The campaign was really started to raise awareness but when we grew as an association, we wanted to take it a step further to make it a fund raiser, so right now Rock Your Socks is our only fund raiser for the year, when we sell socks and raise money for our various initiatives which are free for our members.”
Manager, Corporate Communications at Light & Power, Nichole Scantlebury reaffirmed the company’s support for organisations that build family units stronger by meeting them where they are, “We see you, we appreciate the work you’re doing across Barbados and we applaud and support your efforts in a tangible way today.” Ms. Scantlebury continued, “We recognise that real life is happening every day and at Light & Power we always want to show up where there is a need but especially where there is vision and passion for a cause and we see that with you.”
Mrs. Alleyne-Renwick thanked the company for its donation and shared, “We sold out our socks this year, so we’re very happy about that, she continued, “We thank everyone for the support, especially Light & Power for going that step further and including us in your outreach.”
Light & Power encourages Barbadians to remember those living with Down Syndrome and how it impacts families, who require support all year round. You can help by purchasing socks from the organization.
Mrs. Alleyne-Renwick concluded, “It really means a lot when we see companies going that extra mile to actually donate to the association and the work we do…. We always appreciate any donations around the time of the campaign but also outside of that period which help us to continue our work in support of individuals with Down Syndrome in Barbados.
