Light & Power Sparks Career Inspiration for 35 Young Interns
For the past several weeks, a group of 35 bright and ambitious young individuals has been immersed in hands-on work experiences across The Barbados Light & Power Company Ltd (Light & Power)., gaining valuable exposure to the expertise of staff, a deeper appreciation for the complexities of operating a 24-hour utility, and the opportunity to build meaningful connections with fellow eager learners.
Each year, Light & Power delivers a dynamic and fully immersive internship programme led by the company’s Human Resources Department. Originally established for the children of employees, it has evolved to welcome applications from the wider public. The company is encouraged by the continued interest in the initiative, which remains a sought-after opportunity for young people to explore career pathways and gain practical workplace experience.
Munesh Parasram, Vice President, Innovation & Transformation Division, reflected on the impact internships can have on shaping a young person’s career journey, while addressing the interns at their welcome event.
“When I was coming out of school, it was difficult to understand where I fit as an IT professional. I knew I needed to pursue university studies, but I didn’t have a clear understanding of the different areas of specialization. Everyone spoke about IT in general terms. It wasn’t until I participated in an internship that I had the opportunity to work alongside IT professionals who offered guidance, helped me develop my skills, and shaped my thinking about the path that was right for me. What we do here at Light & Power is pay that experience forward by providing our interns with the same kind of exposure and mentorship.
“As part of their onboarding experience, interns participated in presentations delivered by staff from various divisions across the company, providing insight into the diverse work undertaken at Light & Power. These sessions also gave interns the opportunity to engage directly with employees and have their questions answered.
One of the programme’s signature experiences is a tour of the company’s major generating facilities, including the Spring Garden Generating Station and the Trents Generating Station, where interns also learn about the solar farm and the Clean Energy Bridge initiative. The tour offers a firsthand look at the infrastructure and innovation that help power Barbados every day. One of our Mechanical Maintenance interns Sebastian Paul commented, “We toured all the operations and it was quite an informative tour. Going forward with my internship I’ll be spending more time with the Engineers so I am confident this first-hand knowledge will benefit me in applying the technical understanding required of me, so this is an exciting opportunity for me.
”Zane King shared “I’m learning so much about the way electricity is generated at Light & Power and I now have a better understanding of how the Seawell, Spring Garden, and Trent’s Generating Stations operate and how the solar farm and Tesla batteries support the grid.” Light & Power encourages support for youth from corporate Barbados and remains committed to supporting stronger communities by providing opportunities that advance youth in their various areas of interest.
