Safety & Environment

At the Barbados Light & Power Company Limited we recognize the organization’s responsibility to operate in a manner that emphasizes the preservation of human health and well-being, environmental protection, operational safety, customer excellence and community goodwill.

Safety

Emera and Light & Power’s commitment to safety and health is a critical part of how we work. Our business is on a path to achieve world-class safety, and we’re making progress by deepening our culture of safety and health, and strengthening our disciplined approach to safety performance across our company.

     Our Safety Culture
Everyone working at Light & Power strives to live and work injury-free, and shares a belief that all injuries are preventable. That commitment is part of how we           work, underpinning everything we do. At the beginning of shifts and meetings, team members take a moment for safety, sharing information on the best                 safety  practices and lessons learned from our operations. Many of our companies hold regular safety stand-downs to talk about current areas of safety focus.           Team members are encouraged to set safety-related personal development goals, and take part in the many safety-training sessions offered throughout the             year.

     Public Safety
We work hard to promote public safety through a range of initiatives in our communities. We offer energy safety education sessions in local schools, and more          advanced training sessions to first responders and contractors. Our electrical utilities share information with customers each year on how to stay safe during              annual hurricane seasons.

Environment

Our commitment to managing environmental matters is an integral part of our business. In particular, it is our policy to assure the environmental integrity of our processes and facilities at all times and at all places. We will do so by adhering to the following principles:

  • We will comply with all applicable laws and regulations and will implement programs and procedures to assure compliance.
  • Compliance with environmental standards will be a key ingredient in the training, performance reviews, and incentives for all employees.
